An earthquake measuring magnitude-7.5 was reported early Sunday in the Indian Ocean west of India’s Nicobar Islands. A tsunami warning was issued by The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, inclusive Phuket, but was cancelled early Sunday morning.
According to The U.S. Geological Survey said quake struck at 2:26 a.m. Sunday local Thai time about 155 kilometers west of the Nicobar Islands at a depth of 35 kilometers (about 22 miles).
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii issued a tsunami watch for the region, but later reduced the watch area to only India.
The centre said on Sunday it’s downgrading the threat based on analysis of the quake and because the US Geological Survey has revised the magnitude down from 7.7 to 7.5.
"A destructive widespread tsunami threat does not exist based on historical earthquake and tsunami data," the Hawaii-based centre said.
Original text from the bulletin (later downgraded):
“Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a destructive local tsunami and sometimes a destructive regional tsunami along coasts located usually no more than a thousand kilometers from the earthquake epicenter. Areas further from the epicenter could experience small sea level changes and strong or unusual coastal currents.”
