Thailand was voted the favourite sailing venue and best regatta location in Asia in a new survey . Thailand was voted as having the best sailing grounds and destinations due to an ideal geography, good weather conditions and beautiful scenery. The sailing survey was undertaken by the Top of the Gulf Regatta (www.topofthegulfregatta.com) in co-operation with the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta (www.kingscup.com), with the aim to find out sailing trends in the region, provide useful information in helping to attract more sailors to the region, and to improve facilities and services in the region. The survey found that of the sailors who came to the 25th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, 53% were resident in Asia and 47% lived outside of Asia. Over 27% of the survey respondents were found to have been sailing in Thailand for more than 10 years, while 53% are relative newcomers – sailing in Thailand for only 1-3 years. The survey found that Thailand is a popular sailing destination for international sailors, with many returning numerous times to enjoy the cruising grounds and sailing events Thailand has to offer. There are five major regattas in Thailand that local and international sailors are aware of and have [...]

Hundreds of children from all over Asia, from future world champions to those who just want to have fun, converged on the world’s new Ironman and Triathlon mecca, Phuket, contest the Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club IronKids Phuket Triathlon. IronKids is one of the world’s fastest growing youth sports movements and provides the perfect antidote to the sedentary habits of the Playstation generation. For these kids, their play stations are the pool, the track and the bike. A total of 228 children registered for the race, including 126 individual racers and 102 children in 34 relay teams. Most were in it for fitness and fun, but some serious future champions put their elders in the sport on notice. The brightest star and overall winner was Kuala Lumpur-based Australian Zoe Bowden, 12, the defending champion and one of the world’s fastest triathletes in her age group. Not only did she beat all the older girls from the 13-15 year old category, she also beat the older boys as well, shaving three minutes off her previous personal best to finish in 39 minutes and 23 seconds. She has been tipped as a possible future world champion by none other than TSLC’s triathlon [...]

Phuket’s international sports complex has partnered with one of the world’s leading professional tennis management groups. On Thanyapura’s 23 tropically landscaped hectares among the lush mountain interior of north Phuket, Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club’s (TSLC) world class Tennis Academy features six “Plexicushion” competition standard tennis courts, the only courts of their type in the region. The Plexicushion system is the surface used at the Australian Open. Four of the courts are covered by a high roof, using an innovative material that lets in light but only minimal heat, creating a light, airy and cool environment in all weather conditions. All TSLC courts are lit for night play. Facilities also include luxury male and female locker rooms, a 600-seat shaded grandstand allowing spectators to view all courts, against the picturesque backdrop of the national park. PBI has achieved its position as market leader by providing an extensive range of social and training tennis activities including Junior Tennis Clinics, Ladies Mornings and evening social programmes. PBI provides one-on-one coaching for beginners up to elite level players. PBI’s representative Travis Bertram joins the TSLC as Tennis Director, bringing his considerable experience in club, junior, and elite level coaching to the Thanyapura community.
The Football Legends Tour – a week-long celebration of football in Thailand which culminates in two matches between the Liverpool Legends and Thailand Legends playing for the prestigious “Prime Minister’s Football Legends Charity Cup” – will kick off on Phuket. The matches has been rescheduled and will now take place 29th September to 5th October with the first match on Phuket on 2nd October and the final match in Bangkok on 5th October. “The date change allows us to invite even more famous former Liverpool football stars to Thailand to play in the matches,” said Cris Rosenbergs, Director of North Scoreboard, owner and creator of the Football Legends concept. “This is an unprecedented opportunity for people in Thailand to see these stars up close and watch them in action, and we’re very excited to be able to invite legends such as Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and many other top footballers to take part.” The Liverpool Legends line-up is expected to read like a ‘who’s who’ of Liverpool FC with invitations issued to John Barnes, Ian, Rush and even recently retired Sammi Hyppia and Vladimir Smicer as well as Patrick Berger, Steve McMannaman, and Robbie Fowler, to name just a few.
Asia’s newest world-class sports, fitness and training facility – the Thanyapura Sports & Leisure Club (TSLC) in Phuket – hosted the Canadian Olympic Synchronised Swimming Team as it prepared for the 14th FINA World Swimming Championships in Shanghai. Training in world-class facilities produced great dividends for the team who were able to win the bronze medal in the keenly contested Free Combination competition behind Russia and China. Synch Canada Coach, Julie Sauvé, said she would have no hesitation in returning to the TSLC for training in the lead up to the 2012 London Olympics, which the team will strive to qualify for. “This facility is just fantastic,” Ms. Sauvé said. “I have never seen anything better in the world. I mentioned to the team that our pool (in Canada) was not as good as what we have experienced at the club in Phuket, so it was the perfect opportunity to tune our routines and being able to walk from the hotel to the training facilities was a huge advantage.” As well as providing accommodation for Canada Sync’s athletes and team managers, the TSLC was responsible for their strict dietary programme – using fresh organic ingredients from the TSLC’s DiVine Restaurant [...]

The all-new 5-star Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket has signed as an official co-sponsor of the 2010 Phuket King’s Cup Regatta (PKCR). Held between the 4th and 11th of December, the Regatta is Asia’s largest sailing event. After signing the agreement, Duncan Worthington, Regatta Media and Communications Director, said, “We’re very happy to welcome on-board Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket, and we look forward to working together for this Regatta, and beyond. The new resort is stunning, and ideally located right on Karon Beach.” The new Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket is a 5-star beach resort located in the most secluded area of Phuket’s Karon Beach, with direct beach access, with a backdrop of lush green hills. All of the resort’s 262 spacious rooms, suites, and villas face the bay and feature private balconies and terraces with breathtaking views of the Andaman Sea. The architectural design of the resort takes its inspiration from the classical Sino-Portuguese style brought to Phuket in the nineteenth century. The property is set in a landscaped water park with a ‘lazy river’ ride and four swimming pools. Unlike many other hotels and resorts in the area, Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket is located directly adjacent [...]
