Thailand was voted the favourite sailing venue and best regatta location in Asia in a new survey . Thailand was voted as having the best sailing grounds and destinations due to an ideal geography, good weather conditions and beautiful scenery. The sailing survey was undertaken by the Top of the Gulf Regatta (www.topofthegulfregatta.com) in co-operation with the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta (www.kingscup.com), with the aim to find out sailing trends in the region, provide useful information in helping to attract more sailors to the region, and to improve facilities and services in the region. The survey found that of the sailors who came to the 25th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, 53% were resident in Asia and 47% lived outside of Asia. Over 27% of the survey respondents were found to have been sailing in Thailand for more than 10 years, while 53% are relative newcomers – sailing in Thailand for only 1-3 years. The survey found that Thailand is a popular sailing destination for international sailors, with many returning numerous times to enjoy the cruising grounds and sailing events Thailand has to offer. There are five major regattas in Thailand that local and international sailors are aware of and have [...]

The second day of racing at the 2010 Phuket King’s Cup Regatta saw a slight increase in wind which prompted the race officer to send almost all of the fleets on round the island courses. Whereas the opening day consisted of a series of sprints day two was more of a marathon with the majority of races lasting in excess of three hours. Action in the IRC 2 class is hotting up with Team Sea Bees and the Royal Thai Navy boats once again leading the way. Some things may have changed, last year Team Sea Bees was named Madame Butterfly and skippered by Peter Dyer, but the rivalry between these boats has survived intact. Jamie Watts is in charge of Team Sea Bees and is hoping to go one better than his predecessor who missed out at last year’s Regatta after a nail-biting final day’s racing. Wiwat Poonpat on Royal Thai Navy 1 was the main winner that day but he had to settle for third place today. At the end of a grueling four hour race Team Sea Bees emerged victorious with less than 90 seconds to spare. Hot on their tails was Cdr. Pornprom Sakultem’s Royal Thai [...]

Now in its eighth year, the Phuket International Boat Show (“PIMEX”) continues to grow, promoting the Island’s marine and tourism industries as it attracts increasing numbers of international exhibitors and visitors each year.
Satun and the northern Malaysian state of Kedah has agreed to collaborate in tourism programs to attract more tourists to this part of the region. Kedah Tourism, Domestic Trade, Consumer Affairs, Indian Community and Estate Workers Committee chairman M. Manikumar said the collaboration was meant for designing, transforming and revolutionizing the entire tourism industry towards a new paradigm. "We hope the existence of a new platform, namely the Kedah-Satun Joint Cooperation Committee, since early this year to organize various tourism programs could bring in more tourists to Langkawi Island and the main land of Kedah through the Satun-Langkawi gateway." Manikar was speaking at the launching of the Satun-Langkawi Paramotor Challenge 2010. There are 22 participants from Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore in the Satun-Langkawi Paramotor Challenge 2010 which started today in Satun. Among the exciting events involving the participants are the Paramotor Show, Flour Bombing Competition, Sport Landing Competition and Flying Show before flying in their paramotor over a distance of 15 kilometers. Manikumar said the event was initiated through the Kedah-Satun Joint Cooperation Committee. He added that the state government would consider making the Satun-Langkawi Paramotor Challenge an annual event to boost tourism in Kedah. Source: Bernama
